Happy birthday Matthew!

It's hard to believe that my sweet little boy is 8 years old today! We had fun this morning watching him open presents and this evening we're taking him out for a night of fun activities. It's actually been really nice this year because most years school starts either on his birthday or the day before and as hard as I try his birthday always kind of gets lost in all the back to school craziness. This year school is starting a week later so I'm enjoying that we can celebrate his birthday without trying to fit the activities in with the back to school stuff.

So of course today has gottten me thinking about his birth and that sweet little baby I brought home 8 years ago. Matthew's entry into the world was not an easy one. Due to a very scary prolapsed cord emergency I was rushed into surgery and I was unconscious for Matthew's birth. Shawn and I both missed witnessing his birth. They woke me up an hour later to tell me I had a healthy son and I was so relieved that he was OK that I didn't even care that I missed the whole thing. My favorite memory of that day was when the nurse was trying to wake me up and she told me that I had a healthy 8 pound 1 ounce baby boy with blond hair. Everyone else in our family has brown hair and I just assumed that Matthew would too, so in my half conscious state I remember wondering who she was talking to, lol. I was confused as to why she was trying to tell me about having a blond baby. But sure enough, she was talking to me and I finally got to see my sweet little blond boy.

Matthew has been a joy in our family since he arrived. He's super laid back and has always been such an easy child. When he was little we used to call him the shadow because he followed Josh around everywhere he went. Josh and Matthew are still really close and I love that they're such good friends.

Matthew has always been a really smart child. He taught himself to read at three and at four he memorized all the planets in the solar system in order and could tell you all sorts of amazing facts about them. He likes to read non-fiction books about different topics and he knows all sorts of interesting facts about random things. Matthew is the only kid I know who is genuinely dissapointed when his teacher doesn't hand out homework. In the summer he begs me to print out homework sheets for him to work on and he can't wait for school to start in the fall. Matthew is funny and sweet and a blessing in our lives.

In honor of Matthew's birthday, here is a video I made when he was a baby. I love to watch this every year on his birthday. Happy birthday sweet Matthew! :)

I'm blessed to have him in my life, too.
